Paul Merson reacts to ‘mind-blowing’ Arsenal performance

Paul Merson responds to Arsenal's Europa League exit last week at the hands of Villarreal.

Arsenal's performance in last week's goalless draw with Villarreal was characterized by Paul Merson as "mind-blowing" and the "worst I've ever seen."

The Gunners were held to a goalless draw by Unai Emery's side at The Emirates on Thursday night, sending them out of Europe's second-tier club competition.

Arsenal had lost the first leg 2-1 and knew that a 1-0 win over the Spanish side would have guaranteed them a place in the final against Manchester United.

However, the north Londoners were unable to get into gear and were eliminated from the competition in a disappointing fashion.

Former Arsenal midfielder Merson was unimpressed with what he saw from the Gunners on Thursday night last week, as their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League next season were dashed.

Merson told Sky Sports of Arsenal's results, "It's the worst I've ever seen."

“That is the worst I've ever seen. It was a European semi-final, and there was no sense of urgency.

“If you came in and turned it on with 10 minutes to go, you'd think Arsenal were done.

“At the highest level, it was mind-boggling. [Pierre-Emerick] Formalized paraphrase Aubameyang, the top goal-scorer, is leaving. You need a goal, and you need to keep him on the field.

“You're getting in players who haven't scored a goal all season. It was as bad as it could possibly get, it was an embarrassment. No European football for the first time in 25 years, it’s an absolute joke.”

Arsenal is back in Premier League action on Wednesday night when they travel to take on London rivals Chelsea FC at Stamford Bridge.

The Gunners have not won the Premier League since their famous unbeaten triumph back in 2003-04.
