REPORT: ARSENAL IN TALKS WITH 62-YEAR-OLD, EUROPEAN TROPHY WINNER MAY REPLACE ARTETA

According to Football Italia, Arsenal has begun negotiations to get Maurizio Sarri back to the Premier League as Mikel Arteta's replacement.

It's been a peculiar day for managerial moves, to say the least.

Nobody expected to see Jose Mourinho sign a new deal with a new club on Tuesday morning.

Just hours after Roma reported Paulo Fonseca's departure, it was revealed that the haughty Portuguese man will take over at the Italian giants in time for next season.

Fonseca's departure came as no surprise. That had been planned for quite some time.

But Maurizio Sarri was expected to be the man to succeed the former Porto manager.

Only a few days ago, Calciomercato reported that Sarri and Roma were nearing an agreement, with the chain-smoking 62-year-old demanding a £4 million-a-year deal at the Stadio Olimpico.

Mourinho has now shut the door in Sarri's face. But that doesn't mean the Serie A champion for 2020 will be out of work for long.

Since, according to Football Italia, Arsenal has unexpectedly opened talks with Sarri, two years after his Chelsea side thrashed Unai Emery's Gunners 4-1 in the Europa League final.

According to the article, Sarri will replace the increasingly unpopular Arteta, who may be put out of his misery at the end of a disappointing 2020/21 season. Arsenal is barely in the top half of the table and faces a difficult struggle to make the Europa League final as well.
