Why £78m star could now be Paul Pogba's Manchester United replacement

May Jadon Sancho end up replacing Paul Pogba?

Manchester United has many incentives to sign Jadon Sancho in the early summer to get the club's transfer window off to a fast start.

According to the German channel Sport1, United is in a pole position to sign the winger.

A quick deal for Sancho would be a fantastic start for United's transfer sector... However, there might be a pain in the tail.

According to Sport1, Sancho will cost United about £78 million. That is a significant reduction from Dortmund's asking price a year ago.

One concern for Manchester United fans is that Sancho will be used as a substitute for Paul Pogba.

This would not have been conceivable a year ago. It is now quite possible to see because of Pogba's new role in the attack.

Pogba's deal is coming to an end, and he will only have one year left after this year. He hasn't said much about his future plans in public. United would not want to lose him for a second time on a free transfer.

A late sale to balance the books at the end of the transfer window is possible, and Sancho coming in will help mitigate the loss.

This kind of depth is great over the course of a long season, but it's really difficult to keep everyone satisfied when there's a major cup final and everyone is fit.

Take Pogba out of the equation, and United is still comfortably set, with the choice of adding another young winger or promoting Anthony Elanga for depth.

Pogba has been a revelation in a more defensive position for United this season, producing some of the best football of his career.

Pogba seems to enjoy playing this forward position, but his chances could be limited if Sancho signs.

If he stays, he will simply return to playing in a midfield two, but this is contingent on United signing a new defensive midfielder.

Pogba and McTominay haven't succeeded, and neither have Pogba and Fred.

But we've seen Pogba and Matic shine in the past, and he thrives in a midfield two with Ngolo Kante for France.

Staying at United would be more appealing to Pogba if United signs a top defensive midfielder to replace the aging Matic.

Adding Sancho might entice Pogba to remain, as he sees United strengthening and showing ambition.

In principle, Sancho's possible arrival would be a boost for the club, bringing hope. But, before the transfer window closes, there will be a nagging question that he will be signed as a star name to compensate for Pogba's possible exit, both on and off the field.
