Finally: Man United address embarrassing situation at the club

Marc Skinner, the new manager of Manchester United's women's squad, is on the verge of joining the club.

Manchester United is close to appointing Orlando Pride head coach Marc Skinner as the new Women's team manager after a long search following the retirement of manager Casey Stoney in May.

There is still work to be done on the transaction, but conversations between the Florida NWSL team and United are said to be promising.

The resignation of Stoney, who led the nascent United women's team to promotion to the WSL in their first season, a historic League Cup Manchester Derby victory, and an overall win rate of 67.5 percent in her three years at the helm, was met with disappointment by the squad and supporters alike.

It's also a setback for the Reds, who are on the verge of losing outstanding 19-year-old Lauren James to rivals Chelsea.

However, there is reason to be optimistic about Skinner's appointment.

According to The Telegraph, the United players are excited about the possibility of working with Skinner, the former Birmingham City manager.

He reached the 2017 Women's FA Cup Final with Birmingham, defeating a dangerous Chelsea side along the way.

His sides prefer to pass the ball on the ground and out from behind while remaining defensively sound.

Pride is presently seventh in the 10-team NWSL.

If he is signed by United, he will have the opportunity to work with Vilde Boa Risa, a recent addition and one of the most rated midfielders in Europe.

Boa Risa is a lifelong United supporter, and her signing on a two-year contract is thought to be primarily due to Stoney's persuasion before she left.

Despite some disappointments, the hope is that with some more solid recruitment, particularly Skinner's, the United Women can at least maintain their fourth-place finish from last season.

However, Stoney's now-unfulfilled goal to take the team further may reveal how the club's ownership cut corners.
