Released Manchester United star being considered for free agent move to Chelsea

Sergio Romero is being considered for a free agent transfer to Chelsea.

Sergio Romero departed Manchester United at the end of June and has since returned to Argentina.

However, rather than following Marcos Rojo, who joined Boca Juniors earlier this year, Romero is being linked with a return to the Premier League.

According to the Telegraph, Chelsea is considering signing Romero as a free agent.

Romero is a candidate to replace Eduardo Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga, however, it is uncertain whether the latter wants to continue.

Chelsea is looking at younger goalkeepers, but Romero is a player they are interested in.

Romero joined Manchester United in 2014 and stayed for a total of seven seasons.

He was primarily utilized as a backup, appearing in 61 games, one more than Peter Schmeichel's deputy Raimond van der Gouw.

After representing Argentina in the World Cup final, Romero always felt too good to be a number two, and he was unlucky to have a brilliant David de Gea in front of him.

It would be a shame if he settled for a backup role now, even if it is obviously lovely employment for him, getting paid a lot of money for rarely playing, and it would be nice if he had one last real run of regular football in his career.

Romero, 34, was linked to both Everton and Juventus earlier in the transfer window by The Athletic; at both teams, he would have served as a backup. He is rumored to want to return to the Premier League.

United let Romero leave and re-signed Tom Heaton, who is presently the club's third-choice goalkeeper but may be promoted to second if one of David de Gea or Dean Henderson leaves.

It would be a shame if Romero signed for Chelsea, but there would be no hard feelings on United's part. The club fouled up his situation in 2020 by excluding him from the three-cup semi-finals after he assisted them in getting there and then failing to grant him the move he desired in the summer. His 2020/21 season was utterly squandered because he didn't make a single matchday team.

The players were released by Manchester United on June 30, 2021
