Report: Manchester United plot to hijack Barcelona's move for Atletico Madrid star

The Red Devils have reportedly joined a bidding war for the services of the wanted Spanish midfielder.

Manchester United is allegedly closing in on Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez. The Red Devils have taken the lead ahead of a number of clubs, while a transfer to Barcelona is rumored to be on the cards for the Spaniard.

Saul has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford, but he put those rumors to rest in 2017 when he signed a long-term contract with the club.

With his contract expiring in 2026, the midfielder has ruled out any move in the near future. However, the scenario has shifted in recent months, and the player is rumored to be looking for a move away from Atletico Madrid after falling down the pecking order in the club's bid for the La Liga title last season.

Saul, who has made 337 appearances for Diego Simeone's side since his debut, is thought to be open to new challenges overseas.

Since last week, a move to Barcelona has dominated headlines, with Antoine Griezmann also predicted to return to the Wanda Metropolitano in a swap deal.

However, talks have temporarily halted, and other clubs are thought to be ready to capitalize on the stalemate.

Manchester United, for example, is thought to be making substantial progress in their pursuit of the Atletico Madrid player.

According to Francesc Aguilar, Saul's agent, Jonathan Barnett, has begun researching alternative options, including a move to the Premier League.

Although the Red Devils have yet to make an official proposal for the midfielder, it is rumored that they may be able to secure his services ahead of Chelsea and Liverpool if the sale to Barcelona fails.

While Atletico Madrid and Barcelona continue to negotiate for Saul Guez and Antoine Griezmann, their manager, Englishman Jonathan Barnett, is advancing negotiations with Manchester United, which has given the rojiblanco a decisive step forward, surpassing Liverpool.
